the S.F.D. Fire Chief Craig Mulford

due to the large crowd of friends and realatives. Dyas is a

on your Promotion Chief Pat.
With Shreveport suffering one of the longest droughts in
years and the vegetation being tender dry a fire in
Shreveport's Cedar Grove burned acres of wood and field
areas on Wednesday August 17, 2011 and lasted for hours
before firefighters brought it under control. The fire
was first reported at East 85th Street and Range Lane
about 1:40 p.m. The fire spread quickly because of the
wind and the extreme dry conditions. Over the last few
weeks the SFD and Caddo Parish Fire Districts have
responded to numerous structure and brush fires.
Signal 51 members have responded to just about all of
them with refreshments and cooling towels. Signal
51's funds for refreshment supplies is almost as dry as
the weather we have been having.
On
August 16 just before midnight Shreveport Firehouse
Speakers came on with the alert tones and the
dispatcher broadcast that a house was on fire in the 600
block of Springhill. Engine 7 was first on the
scene and reported that the house was fully involved.
Later a 2nd alarm was requested and when embers caught
the roof of a house on
Euclid St. just behind the original house a full
box alarm assignment was dispatched to it. At the
height of the fire on Springhill flames were shooting 50
feet into the air. Firefighters had trouble
finding fire hydrants that had sufficient water capacity
to fight the fire. A request to the water
department to increase the pressure to the area
alleviated the water problem, but it took nearly an hour
to bring both fires under control. Nobody was hurt.
Authorities think the fire may have been deliberately
set.

Mayor Cedric Glover appointed Captain Craig Mulford
Chief of the Shreveport Fire Department on July 4.
Mulford, 47, joined the fire department in 1982. He is
married and has two children. His father, Ronald Mulford,
was a fire department employee for 33 years. Craig
Mulford also has a brother and brother-in-law with the
department. Craig Mulford was among five finalists for
the position out of 22 that applied. Although he is the
Fire Chief, his appointment is subject to ratification
by Shreveport city council members. Former Chief Brian Crawford will start a new job Tuesday as Chief Administrative Officer for Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover.
The members of the Signal 51 Group congratulates Chief Mulford on being selected to head one of the finest fire departments in the country. We know you will do an outstanding job.
An eight-inch medium pressure gas line was struck
by APSI Engineers a little before 3:00PM Wednesday,
May 20th while they were taking soil samples outside the
old Ogilvie Hardware store in preparation for its
renovation. The gas from the ruptured line caught fire,
and quickly spread to the back of the drilling truck.
SFD firefighters contained the fire using spray patterns
from their hose lines to keep it from spreading to the
forward portion of the truck, and to the combustible
fuel and generator on the vehicle. After the gas
company's repair crew arrived the flames were put out
and the broken gas line was capped.

A
line of trucks caught fire at a Chesapeake drilling site in west
Shreveport May 15, sending a dark plume of smoke
skyward. 24 fire and support vehicles were used
from Caddo Fire Districts 3, 4, 1 and Shreveport Fire.
The fire spread quickly to the adjacent trucks, and by
the end of the day, 10 18-wheelers were engulfed and
destroyed. The trucks were carrying hydraulic fracturing
fluid, a mixture used in the final stages of the
drilling process. The fire started around 11:30 a.m. when a Cudd Energy Services truck caught fire while working on the Lee 21H-1 natural gas well site near the intersection of Greenwood Road and Rice Road. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. MORE
In
conjunction with the Association of Public Safety
Communications Officials (APCO) International, the
City of Shreveport will honor local Public Safety
Telecommunications Officers from the Shreveport Police
and Fire Departments and Caddo Sheriff’s Office during
the week of April 10th. On Monday, April 11, 2011 at
8:15 a.m., Shreveport Fire Chief Brian A. Crawford will
present Mayor Glover’s Proclamation to publicly
recognize emergency professionals for their excellent
service. “Our telecommunications officers play a vital
role in the process of saving lives because they’re the
first point to contact between the public and our first
responders,” said Chief Crawford. This national recognition comes on the heels one of our department’s greatest success stories. On March 28, 2011, a SFD communication officer received a 9-1-1 call. However, the caller was choking uncontrollably and unable to speak. FCOII Sharon Clark’s training and instincts helped her to quickly identify this time-critical emergency which ultimately saved this person’s life. The purpose of the national observance is to honor men and women who respond to emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and those rendering life-saving assistance. For additional information about events planned for National Telecommunications Week, please contact Ashley Wiggins at 318-675-2137.

A Signal 51 member's job is always something different. The Gemini
Mardi Gras Parade (Saturday evening - 2/26/11) is just down my street. I was watching the congested traffic at the corner of Capt.
Shreve and Preston Ave. from 6:30 till almost 10:00p.m. There were two S.P.D. Units keeping traffic moving. Many parade visitors asked for help
with directions and I was asked many questions about different Parade
Routes. About 7:30 there were 2 minor car accidents with no injuries. I had
a man on stilts come to me with wrist pain from a fall he had taken
during the Parade. Engine 1 came and checked him out. He had a slight
sprain and carried on. That's when everything got crazy. There was a
Marching band from a local school coming through and then, all of the
sudden, one young male band members passed out in the middle of the
street. I knew I had to get this guy out of the traffic quickly. I
had at least 10 students all over my back asking why I was trying to
assist this patient. I told someone to call 911 (fire dept) and sprint
car arrived with Paramedic Damon Johnson and Firefighter Michael?
Damon prepared an I.V. and
monitored Blood Pressure and respiration's. Damon kept asking for a medic
unit to respond, but all medic units were tied up. Little did I know
when getting the patient out of the street, my pants were torn showing
my undergarments...l.o.l. I did not care, just wanted to see this young
man get to feeling better. Finally a medic unit arrived and was picked
up and sent him to the hospital for care. I must compliment
Paramedic Damon Johnson and Fire driver Michael on being such
professionals. I forgot to tell you that a generator on the Duke's and
Duchesses float caught on fire. Thank God for fire extinguishers as
someone used one to put the fire out. I
think, at the next parade, I'm going to pick another corner so I can
have time to watch the parade....l.o.lSubmitted by: Michael Clikas - Member Signal 51 Group and SFD Fire Corps
Shreveport Fire Chief Brian Crawford will leave his job to take a
position under Mayor Cedric Glover as assistant chief
administrative. Mayor Glover also announced on Twitter,
that he sent a letter asking the Civil Service Board
call for a Fire Chief's exam. The Mayor also said that
Crawford will remain chief and not resign "until we are
further along in the exam and selection process," Chief Crawford will make the City of Shreveport a fine assistant chief administrator. He has been an outstanding fire chief and while we hate to loose him as our fire chief we know that he will do an excellent job in his new position. At least he will not be leaving the city. Good luck, Chief Crawford.

Shreveport firefighters fought a huge 3 Alarm fire in
the old Gould automobile battery plant 6600 blk of
Westport Dr. As Engine 12 left their station they reported heavy black smoke showing from the plant. A
second alarm was transmitted upon the arrival of the
first Battalion Chief. Shortly, thereafter more Engine
and Ladder Cos., the Hazmat Unit, additional Medic units
and water tanker trucks from several Caddo Fire
Districts were requested and responded. Lack of
sufficient water supplies and long hose lays hampered
the firefighting effort at first and required using
hydrant-assist appliances that enabled the pumpers to
increase the water flow. The fire was reported around
1343hrs on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 . A great deal of
hose was laid and by 2000hrs almost all the hose had
been picked up and only a few companies remained on the
scene. >> More << >> Cell Phone Video <<
