Fire at Mid South Tower - 416 Travis Street
July 1, 2009

The Mid South Tower in downtown Shreveport was evacuated this morning after a fire in an elevator motor at the top of the building.

The fire, which was reported at 10:43 a.m., was quickly extinguished. Firefighters spent the afternoon venting smoke out of the Travis Street building and people who work in the 16-story building would not be allowed back in for the rest of the day, Fire Chief Brian Crawford said.

An elderly man was taken from the building on a stretcher but his medical condition was related to his diabetes and not the fire, Crawford said. A building maintenance worker fell and hit his head but did not want to go to the hospital and he was evaluated at the scene, authorities said.

The fire happened in an elevator motor at the top of the building. Witnesses reported hearing a loud pop and then saw smoke.

The worst of the smoke was on the 16th floor but smoke went down the elevator shaft and all of the building was affected. Smoke was coming out of the ground-floor lobby at one point.

There was no structural damage to the Mid South Tower, Crawford said.

Approximately 150 people evacuated the building, authorities said.
